The name heath stands for a man made dwarf heather shrubland which carpets the whole area with its rose-pink hue.
August and September are the best time for visiting this unique place.
The juniper gives the region a special character and the moorland sheep "the living mowers " are still used as such to keep the heather at an optimum height af about 8 inches.
In the 1800 there were about 1 million moorland sheep called "Heidschnucke", today there are only a few thousands left and can be found around Celle. They are guarded and worked by a shepard and his shepard dogs.
Another unique and intrinsic symbol of the heath are the bees. Bee keeping can be found all over the area and traditional bee hives and bee keepers can be seen at work.
